MIZZOU and NEBRASKA tired of being stepchildren

So Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe thinks he can bully the Universities of Missouri and Nebraska, into re-committing to the Big XII conference by his Friday the 11th deadline or else. If I am Mizzou or Nebraska, I respond very loudly” OR ELSE WHAT?”

Do you really think that Beebe, who is really nothing more than a mouthpiece for University of Texas athletic Director DeLoss Dodds, will kick the top 2 football schools from the north division out of the conference? The north has struggled enough to keep up with the south division if football, and losing Mizzou and Nebraska would make the division a total farce. This would drain the small pond that the big fish UT just loves to swim in.

This deadline which is actually coming directly from Austin is nothing more than a smokescreen to keep UT and its sister schools (A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State,) from having to follow through on their bluff to bolt for the Pac 10. UT does not want to have to compete for big fish status with USC. They don’t want to compete with Hollywood for the glitz. UT has things just the way they want them in the Big 12, they get the lion’s share of the conferences television revenue, such as it is, and have assurances from Boobo uh I mean , Beebe that they will be able to form their own Longhorn television network, which will guarantee them financial dominance over the small 11.

The problem is some of the small 11 may have options; Mizzou and Nebraska have been rumored to be on the Big 10 conference wish list for expansion. Missouri and Nebraska would be two of the three Big XII schools which would be a fit for the Big Ten academically, Texas would be the other. At this point the Big Ten has not made an offer to either school, or announced for sure that they are expanding. Financially it makes a lot of sense for both schools to make the move if offered, since the Big Ten has a much more lucrative television than the Big XII, and always will thanks to UT’s insistence on having their own deal, and the Big Ten splits television revenue equally, every member of the BIG Ten receives more television money than every Big XII school including UT. There is also the issue of bowl game assignments, like all conferences the Big Ten has contracts to provide their proper placed teams to specific bowl games based on those contracts. For the past three seasons, Mizzou has watched as lower finishing teams are awarded higher bowl games. Including 2007 when Kansas was awarded a coveted BCS Orange Bowl bid, despite being beaten soundly by Mizzou on the final week of the regular season. This has not gone unnoticed in Columbia. And do you really think the folks in Lincoln are going to forget how Big XII officials put 1 second back on the clock, to allow Texas to kick the winning field goal in this year’s Big XII championship game. It is also ridiculous that the Big XII title game has been awarded to the state of Texas in perpetuity.

Who can blame Mizzou and Nebraska for flirting with the Big Ten; it is obvious that The Big XII takes care of UT first and foremost. These Universities are only watching out for themselves. And by the way, why is there no deadline for the Big XII south schools, allegedly receiving invitations from the Pac 10? There are two reasons, 1. This is a BLUFF; they don’t really want to travel to California 2. One of the schools is UT, and Beebe is and always will be in bed with DeLoss Dodds. All Beebe is trying to do is insure that UT is still the king in a legitimate conference, and as much as he will never admit it, he needs Mizzou and Nebraska more than they need the Big XII. Mizzou and Nebraska should look Beebe and Dodds in the eye on Friday and state “We will remain in the Big XII conference until it is no longer in our best interest to do so” and then walk away. Call their bluff. If Beebe wants assurances then the Big XII should assure:

1. All television revenues will be split evenly

2. Stick to the standings for bowl assignments

3. Rotate the conference championship game between both divisions

4. DEVELOP a plan to increase television revenues for ALL schools

5. Name a commissioner that is not in the pocket of a member school

Until that happens” we are members of the Big XII until WE decide otherwise”. I am embarrassed, as alumni of UT, by this bullying tactic. It is obvious and beneath them. Mizzou and Nebraska should continue to keep their options open.

  2. If Missouri fans would actually travel, then they wouldn't be passed over for bowls...

Nebraska benefits from the inequitable revenue sharing as well, being one of the top TV appearing teams in the conference, so they might not be all that keen on it going away.

Finally, is the championship game being in Dallas for the next few years (not in perpetuity) really that big a deal? Does anyone complain that the basketball tournament has been and will continue to be held less than 50 miles from perennial champ Kansas? Does anyone in the SEC complain that their championship game is held in Atlanta and not rotated? This just never seemed like that big a deal really.

  3. You mentioned 2007 not being selected to go to the orange bowl instead of Kansas, if I remember correctly Missouri got thier butt handed to them by OU in the conference champion game, knocking them out of the Fiesta bowl, and giving them two loses on the season, the Big 12 does not have a contract with the Orange Bowl so had no say in who they select, So the Orange Bowl selected a team with 1 loss to face thier contracted opponent. If Missouri could learn to beat lower ranked teams they might get invited to BCS bowls. It seems that MU was rated #1 when they were handily beaten by OU in the ccg.

  4. And if you remember Mizzou had more impressive wins over more impressive opponents that year. The fact that they got the Orange Bowl was a complete disaster. They didn't even play for their own conference title that year. But they got a BCS bowl for mediocrity? AND of those 2 losses that MU had they were BOTH from OU...who ended up playing for the national title that year. Before you start regurgitating BS about a flash in the pan football program look at the facts first. That Orange Bowl was a backdoor deal and everyone knows it.

  7. Nailed it. Also don't get all butt-hurt Oklahoma, you know the big 12 favors Texas.

  8. Oh Lord. Whoever wrote this post needs to come to the next Alumni meeting, so the rest of us can "talk some sense" into you. You don't seem to get it--UT needs to look out for its long-term interests, and that means $. There's nothing wrong with playing hardball with Nebraska. The Longhorn Network is for baseball and smaller sports, not football/baseball. If you were a real UT sports fan, you'd miss not having access to UT baseball this week.

Nebraska wants a platform to whine on, I say good riddance. UT would be FAR better served in the Pac-10 without them.

  9. 1. I don't believe you are a graduate of UT. For one, if you were indeed a UT graduate, I'd think you'd know that it is improper for a person to claim, in the singular sense, to be an "alumni." A single person is an alumnus, or if you're female, an alumna. Secondly, for someone who claims to be a UT grad, this screed of yours is TOTALLY anti-UT & pro-Mizzou. There's no way a bona fide UT alumnus would produce such anti-UT drivel, unless you have a f-ed up sense of self-loathing or something like that.

    2. UT didn't make the Orange Bowl take KU over MU that year. UT didn't make the Insight Bowl take ISU over MU last year either. For whatever reason(s), the bowl committees of those respective bowls preferred another team over MU. Blame them, not the conference.

    3. The title games ARE rotated b/t North & South. So far, 7 games have been held in TX & 7 in MO. Not only that, but KC has hosted the FB title game MORE THAN any other city.

In addition, I don't hear North division fans complaining that the conference basketball tourney has been held in KC 9 times, almost DOUBLE Dallas & OKC put together. If you want to rotate the football game, do the SAME for the basketball tourney too. Otherwise, you're just yet another no-nothing hypocrite.

    4. There is ZERO proof that Beebe is "in UT's pocket." Beebe is trying to keep the conference together in light of MU's, NU's, & CU's wanderlust.

    6. MU & NU started the fire by saying they'd leave for the Big 10. Don't be mad b/c someone threw water on you.

  10. Edit: "no-nothing" should be "know-nothing."

  11. I agree with you 100%. The Texas fans are ignorant as hell.

  12. Right, if you are a UT grad then you must bow low before the great-god Bevo and allow no introspection.

You are not allowed to consider that your own greed or arrogance is pushing Nebraska and MU away. For your own validation, just forget that Nebraska wanted to split the TV revenue equally but was voted down 11-1. Forget that Texas didn't want partial qualifiers because they knew that the Jr. College's in Texas would feed them all of those kind of athletes that they wanted.
Forget that the Big XII title game will never leave Jerry Jones World. Forget that the Conference offices are in Dallas. Or that Dodds is the second most powerful man in the Big XII,(or is it the most powerful man in the Big XII)?

The second put back on the clock in the Big XII was the right call, but it is also emblematic of the relationship Nebraska has had with Texas from the beginning.

If you can't understand that, then you are well...Texas.

  13. The most humorous comment is from the KSU homer. Winning consistently? Ha! How many major championships does Kansas State have in football? Last I checked they were still in the wannabe category. Guess someone is worried about being the doormat to everyone after the B12 is done.

Nebraska and Missouri should dart. I'm tired of the Texas bias in the B12.

  14. I can't help but laugh at this blog. Texas/Deloss Dodds does not bluff. Nebraska and Mizzou were given a deadline. You are either in or out. It just eats at Nebraska that Texas has all the power and money. Texas brings tradition, National Championships in almost every sport, academics and most important 2 of the top 10 television markets. Nebraska has less than 700 thousand television sets. Nebraska offers and brings nothing to the table. I'll say it again, DeLoss Dodds does not bluff. Do us all a favor Nebraska, show yourself to the door and don't let it hit you on the way out.

  15. Total Conference Titles by Universities:
    North Division
    Nebraska - 68
    Colorado - 27
    Kansas - 22
    Iowa State - 11
    Kansas State - 7
    Missouri - 6

    South Division
    Texas - 106
    Texas A&M - 44
    Oklahoma - 38
    Baylor - 36
    Oklahoma State - 35
    Texas Tech - 10

This true stat. begs to differ. Besides Texas, Nebraska brings everything to the table in this conference. Texas will crumble after the Big 12 does and they have to face better competition other than Nebraska and OU.

    BOOMER SOONER!

  18. How are we kidding. The bias against UT apparent in this article are could not come a UT alum. That is fairly clear, and it drips through the entire piece. So be honest about who you are, "kid".

    >This deadline which is actually coming directly from Austin is nothing more than a smokescreen to keep UT and its sister schools (A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State,) from having to follow through on their bluff to bolt for the Pac 10.

This didn't start with UT, though we are always the biggest school around which these topics always turn.

    >UT does not want to have to compete for big fish status with USC. They don’t want to compete with Hollywood for the glitz.

PLEASE! No one ever in the town of Austin for school would have uttered this clearly idiotic phrase. Austin has no Hollywood envy, or any California envy of any kind.

    >UT has things just the way they want them in the Big 12, they get the lion’s share of the conferences television revenue, such as it is, and have assurances from Boobo uh I mean, Beebe that they will be able to form their own Longhorn television network, which will guarantee them financial dominance over the small 11.

Dude, UT is the highest ranking sports revenue team in ALL of college sports, and the number two is $20 mil/year behind them. Whether they would make $10, 12, or 20, or 30 mil/yr from TV, though that may be make or break money for other schools, it is NOT a dealbreaker for any conference UT wants to think about, and the difference is relatively small potatoes in the $140 mil/year UT brings into their sporting programs. So UT's money "dominance" over the "Small 11" you mention is guaranteed no matter what share of the Big 12 TV revenue pie they big in. In all fairness, they generally do have by far the largest number of (especially) national TV games, so that is why they get a first share of pie. So some other teams want more and bigger paydays. Show up and play well, so people will want to watch you. Why is that elitist or unfair by UT?

"Kid", your Big XII North skirts are showing, regardless of which alma mater you "claim" to be a part of. No self-respecting Longhorn would be caught dead having written a piece as idiotic as this.

  19. Follow-up from anon at 12:29PMJune 8, 2010 at 12:47 PM

    A few more facts...

Last year, Big 12 schools divided between $7 million and $12 million depending on how many appearances they made on regional and national TV. That means Texas usually pockets the biggest share, with the likes of Missouri lagging behind.

    =====================

Texas, the richest and most powerful Big 12 member, remains the lynchpin of the entire league. The other 10 schools could probably work something out if Nebraska and Missouri left. But if the Longhorns pull up stakes, it could prove devastating to the league.

"You've known me for very long, I am not hanging back," Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds said. "I'm not waiting to see what other people are going to do. I'm going to know what our options are, so that's not going to change. My hope is that the Big 12 survives and you and I retire knowing it's a great conference. It's been very viable, and if it stays in place, it will continue to be very viable."

Dodds noted that Texas was not the one that started realignment talk.

"If we need to finish it, we'll finish it," he said. "We're going to be a player in whatever happens."

  20. Great Article. Leave Mizzou, head to greaner pastures!

  21. This is a great article that demonstrates why a break up MUST occur.
Nebraskans, along with many others, don't understand that on field performance has NOTHING to do with a schools conference value. It is all about eyeballs, and national appeal, which Nebraska and Mizzou have very little of.
I hate UT, but they have a MASSIVE nationwide following. (Notre Dame and USC are comparable). UT can (and does) dictate its terms. Like it or not, that is the reality of life in TV Contract land.
Mebraska is a great University with formidable and storied sports teams, but their value simply isn't there.
Mark my words, if Notre Dame accepts a Big 10 offer, the Big 10 will act like they never heard of Nebraska and Mizzou.

  22. And so Texas ruins another conference...

  23. As a true alumnus, I love the envy and hatred. We have a top brand in college athletics, you are angry that we don't let you 100% freeload on our brand's value. Enjoy trying to get into the Big 10, please fail to commit so that UT, OU, et al can go west to a real conference and procure a real television contract with real television markets and real metropolises, not Kansas f'ing City and Lincoln.

  24. If UT goes to the Pac 10, that is where they cut off their noses to spite their face. Lose control, lose BevoTV, and lose $$. Just to prove a point to NU that UT is the prettiest and most desirable girl around.

UT would do best to keep the Big 12 around either with 10 teams or add 2 more (Utah and whomever). That is why the “ultimatum” is more a hollow threat and a sign of weakness, not strength, on the part of UT, and why you don’t see any public reaction to it by NU. Getting back up to 12 teams would be better from a TV revenue standpoint for the conference, but still less than if NU and MU stayed put, which is why UT wants NU to commit to the Big 12. That will be the best for UT: the highest possible network contract revenue, plus UT will get the additional revenue from BevoTV. Of course, that will cause further revenue imbalance in the conference, but UT doesn’t care about that, and in fact would prefer it, as it makes it easier to win across all athletics, and provides additional money to the University. That is the major reason NU is leaving: UT cares only about itself, not what is best for the conference, and that is currently highlighted by UT’s position on BevoTV and the location of the championship game.

UT is scared that the Big 12 will implode; it strongly wants to keep things exactly the way they are, and go down the road and establish BevoTV. It knows that if NU leaves, the Big 12 becomes a weak conference, even with OU and A&M. Championship games against KU or KSU or Utah just won’t cut it. TV revenues will remain half what they are in the Big 10. UT also knows that, as compared to its control of the Big 12, it will have much less power in the Pac 10. Do you think the Pac 10 will play 5 championship games in a row at Jerry World? More likely it will be 5 straight at the Rose Bowl, where UT (or OU) will have to travel 1000 miles and get to be the “away” team against USC. And the Pac 10 will likely never allow BevoTV (unless the Pac 10 totally screws it up). And the Pac 10 requires unanimous decisions, so UT+5 won’t be able to rule the conference. And playing football games in Oregon won’t be nearly as convenient as playing them in Manhatten or Lincoln. And the non-revenue sports will cost much more when you have to travel 1500-2000 miles and 2 time zones to get there. Whether it is a weakened Big 12 without NU, or going to the Pac 10, neither option is nearly as profitable to UT as the status quo. Which is why the Longhorns are issuing ultimatums, and making threats to pack up their marbles and take their friends to a new playground if NU won’t commit to playing marbles with them. But what UT simply won’t do is make the concessions necessary to keep NU and MU in the Big 12. They are too proud and arrogant for that. They are “King” and don’t want to admit they need to pay attention to what their “Princes” demand. So, the Big 12 will bite the dust.
